Cracks will form when the tensile stress exceeds the tensile strength of the concrete. Effects will often be cumulative which can make diagnosis difficult and can have significant long-term consequences. However, though the factors and concrete properties which influence cracks are variable, it is often possible to predict when and where non-structural cracks are likely to form and to limit them to acceptable levels by means of design and/or construction techniques.
